In 1974, George Mitchell’s vision of The Woodlands as an exceptional planned community began to become reality. In 1997, that vision and the quality of life it embodied, led Claude Hunter and his family to relocate to The Woodlands. Later that year The Woodlands Corporation was sold to a joint partnership. Claude immediately decided to become a full time volunteer serving residents. Since 1997 he has worked towards achieving a government where elected representatives of The Woodlands would continue the qualities that make The Woodlands so very special.

In  1999, The Woodlands Association recognized Claude as Outstanding Volunteer for service with Covenant Administration. In 2000, Claude was elected as Director and became a Vice President of The Woodlands Association. Since then, Claude has represented residents of The Woodlands on most committees and boards that comprise local governance of The Woodlands. For more than ten years he has worked with others to bring the two resident associations together on issues of importance. Examples of such Issues include improvements in law enforcement, budget, Entergy Power Line placement, recreation, future governance, mobility and many others. Claude is a graduate of The University of Texas with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a graduate of Leadership Montgomery County and The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Academy.

As a native Houstonian, Claude knew first hand that annexation was not our best option. He believed self governance was better for our community. He began working with legislators and other leaders in 1999 to evaluate and improve opportunities for self governance for The Woodlands. Claude was a charter member of a group that started a Governance Process to explore options, seek public input and implement a governance plan based on that input. In 2004, Claude was appointed to represent residents on the Governance Steering Committee. In 2007, he actively supported legislation that allows us to form our own governance. In November 2007, The Woodlands voters overwhelmingly approved creation of The Woodlands Township to include all areas of The Woodlands in Montgomery and Harris Counties. The work of transitioning from our present complicated governance with 28 Community Association Director positions and eleven Township (formerly Town Center) Directors to a much simpler and more cost effective governance with seven at-large elected Directors has just begun. True Democracy shall prevail.

Claude seeks your vote and support to carry out the will of the majority and to make this transition and our future governance an overwhelming success. Claude believes the residents must have an opportunity to vote to determine their own permanent form of government as soon as allowed by existing agreements with Houston and Conroe.
